Preparing for Your Adventure Vacation

Whether you are going on an adventure vacation by yourself or with a group, there are many steps you should take in advance in order to prepare yourself to have the most comfortable, safe and fully immersive experience possible.

Create a medical kit:
A first aid kit is a must-have on any trip, but if you are taking an adventure vacation like white water rafting, climbing or diving, then you need a specialized medical kit that includes treatment materials for the individual issues you could face on your adventure. Make sure you also include any medications or supplies you need to treat any pre-existing conditions you may have.

Emergency food and water: Pack some bottles of water and lightweight trail foods in an emergency food and water kit so that if you are trapped or separated from your group you can still survive. If possible, include a water purification system.

Pack versatile clothing for layering: If you are traveling to an environment you are unfamiliar with, then you need to be prepared for quick shifts in weather. The best way to do this is to pack light layers of clothing so that you can dress in multiple layers each day. Be sure to include some water repellent clothing in the event that you face rain or unexpected bodies of water.

Take a safety course: You should take both a first aid class and a course in safety that directly applies to the types of activities you will be taking part in as you travel. This will help you learn how to appropriately treat injuries that could occur.

Buy international travel health insurance: With international travel health insurance, you can be sure that you get the treatment you need if you should become ill or have an accident while traveling. When you apply for the insurance, be sure to let them know the nature of your planned trip so that they can underwrite your policy appropriately.

Become familiar with local customs: You can avoid a lot of awkwardness and learn how to communicate your needs more effectively if you take the time to learn how to act around natives of the area you are visiting. Utilize your local library to find books on customs and cultures.

With the many different options available to adventure travelers, it is impossible to create a comprehensive list of everything you could possibly need. Be sure to talk to other travelers who have done what you are doing so you can get the inside scoop on what and how to pack. By taking these few extra steps, you can make sure your vacation is all about the adventure, rather than regret about how you should have prepared for it.
