Borneo - Eco-Adventure and Cultural Diversity in the Land of Headhunters

The third largest island in the world, Borneo is a tropical paradise housing the oldest and most bio-diverse rainforest on earth, endless pristine white beaches and an abundance of national wonders. Borneo is divided between Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia, the largest territory being appropriated to Malaysia. The two states of Sarawak and Sabah, separated from mainland Malaysia on the west by the South China Sea, make up Malaysia's part of Borneo.
As large as it is, Borneo is still a microcosm of spectacular flora and fauna, housing the Rafflesia, the world's largest flowering plant, and the scary, insect-digesting Pitcher plant. As well, Borneo is home to unique animals, among them the shy Orangutans, the rare and unusual Proboscis Monkey and the ludicrous Bearded Pig.
Travel to Borneo is a step into adventure. An abundance of national parks, virgin jungles and rainforests, meandering rivers and cascades, extensive cave systems and sandy white beaches offer adventures of every kind for every level. A morning stroll in Mulu National Park or a week's trek in pristine jungle; a river safari or white water rafting on the Rejang, Malaysia's longest river; caving and exploring the world's most extensive cave systems or snorkeling and scuba diving off the unspoiled reefs of the South China Sea - all are here for the taking.
In concert, Borneo's cultural diversity, including 27 distinct ethnic groups speaking 45 languages and dialects provides a unique local experience. Indigenous culture remains ingrained in the lifestyle of its inhabitants, who adhere to a variety of native traditions, practices and religions. Beyond the towns and cities, life here still revolves around the longhouseskampungs and the rivers. Malays and Chinese established themselves alongside native groups with such evocative names as Iban, Melanau, Penan, Kelabit ad Bidayuh, grouped together under the general term Dayak, to form a richly varied population, each with their own culture and traditions. To this day, the largest group, the Iban, reputed to be Borneo's most formidable headhunters of past, dwell in communal fashion in longhouses, stilted structures with many rooms that house an entire community of families. Beside them, the Melanau, traditionally fishermen and seafaring people, live in Kampungs (Malaysian villages) - a cluster of wooden homes on high stilts near Borneo's rivers.
Be it eco adventure outdoors, a cultural experience or both, Sarawak and Sabah, Malaysia's Borneo Island states boast the most diverse, exciting and the very best of family adventure travel on earth.

And whilst we are talking about planning, don't forget to include a comprehensive travel insurance package as part of your considerations.

Although there are plenty of good health facilities it is always good to have a backup plan for an emergency evacuation, should the occasion arise. A good travel insurance policy will do this for you.

Let's see how Indonesia can satisfy your tourist urges.

  • Lombok.
The big waves of the Gili Islands attracted surfers from around the world. You can base yourself at Matram the local capital and make your way out to the big breaks every day. Of course this is the only beach you can visit there are literally dozens scattered along the coastline.

  • Sulawesi.
This strange ''H'' shaped island is as beautiful as its shape is strange with a huge cultural diversity and a mysterious reputation as the home of ancient pirates. Active volcanoes provide an eerie backdrop to the Emerald green rice paddies that surround them and the proud locals live their lives as if nothing has changed. If you are lucky enough you may be able to witness a funeral ceremony which is so elaborate you will find it hard to believe.

  • Kalimantan.
Although this region occupies over two thirds of Borneo, it is the least visited area in Indonesia. Unfortunately, its rich thick forests are disappearing as quickly as the foresters' chainsaws can buzz, although recent attempts at arresting this process are having some success. Tourists will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the forests and mountains and will even be able to partake of a home stay experience by living with a village family for a number of days. Always make sure that your holiday insurance policy will cover you if you decide on a home stay.

  • Bali.
Despite the trouble experienced a few years ago following a terrorist attack in which several hundred tourists were killed, Bali is bouncing back and is fast becoming, yet again, one of Indonesia's most popular destinations. Tourists can enjoy fantastic relaxing beaches whilst at night the nightclubs and restaurants are bulging with tourists.

  • Java.
This is the main island of Indonesia and although does not have the natural beauty you will find in many other places in Indonesia, the population ensures that it is the heart and soul of the country.
Over one third of Indonesia's 17,000 islands remains uninhabited, so there remains plenty of options for tourists to explore at their leisure and maybe discover hidden delights that your fellow travellers have never seen before.

Indonesia's Budget Airlines

Indonesia has been going through a quiet economic revolution and part of that has been the opening of Indonesia's skies to low budget airlines. This has fuelled a change in the way most Indonesians travel, and opened up previously unknown destinations to local tourism.

Before Indonesia had an open skies policy, most Indonesians used to travel on long journeys bus or a boat. To many migrants who flocked to the nation's cities, this often meant traveling for days, to get home to see their loved ones.

All this has changed as many more destinations have opened up, and airports have sprung up in the most isolated and unlikely places. Average Indonesians are on the move, as air flights still remain low compared to International prices- largely fuelled by the country's cheap oil.

This quiet revolution in Indonesian air travel, was not without its critics. During the early days of deregulation, some airlines sprung up selling cheap tickets, but cut back on safety to make a profit. Adam Air was one infamous example, but after one plane simply disappeared into the sea, and several accidents. They were closed down.

The days of the 'wild west' feel of flying domestically in Indonesia has changed. Safety measures have meant that ticket prices have increased, but so has the choice of destinations- and most domestic airlines can now fly again to Europe, and other areas of the World.

There are over half a dozen low budget airlines in Indonesia. Some are regional, ferrying workers to far off Islands in Riau province, to national airlines which ply all the major cities in Indonesia. Some airlines specialize in more remoter destinations, opening them up to tourism and boosting their local economies, offering Indonesians weekend packages to more exotic, and previously neglected destinations. Boosting local business, and connecting the local population to cheaper trade routes.

Sukarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta, is the main regional hub for domestic airlines, and it resembles more an upscale bus terminal nowadays, with affordable food courts, and a wide array of safe transport to the city. But so has Batam in Riau, or Makassar in Sulewesi, and a wide range of lesser airports like Surakarta airport in central Java that has flights to Singapore, and Malaysia.

Indonesian airlines also have adopted a sophisticated booking system, with etickets, and a payment system through local ATM's. Prices are based on the European model, depending on the season, and how long you book in advice, may differ. Consumers in Indonesia are kept up to date by the airlines, receiving regular text messages offering "specials" on certain routes- and passengers can relax in private lounges offered by the airlines, if they become members of their "club."

The benefits of Indonesia's open skies policy has shielded the country from the recession, and created hundreds of thousands of jobs. Businesses are expanding throughout Indonesia, to cater for the growing demand in inter-island commerce, and tourism.

Bounded humans absolutely acknowledge it if you can use a few words of Bahasa Indonesia, the accent which binds Indonesia, and crosses bounded and cultural assortment in this huge archipelago.

Visa Regulation
To access Indonesia your authorization needs to be accurate for at atomic addition 6 months from your date of entry. Immigration admiral are on the attending out for passports which accept beneath authority and are aural their rights to abjure you access into Indonesia.

30 day Acceptance on Arrival
At the time of autograph the amount for a 30 day Acceptance on Arrival for Indonesia is US$25, which you should pay in US$ cash, with unmarked, apple-pie coffer addendum which were issued afterwards 2001. If you intend to biking to, or break for any breadth of time off the baffled track, you are traveling to charge to backpack acceptable Indonesian banknote with you to pay for accommodation, aliment and transport. In Bali there is currently a botheration with rabies advance by ailing dogs. If you are aching or apathetic by a dog, you charge to get medical affliction as bound as possible.

Water - even bounded humans alcohol bottled water! It's cheap, so don't yield any risks.

Sex is fun, but amuse accomplish abiding that condoms are acclimated should you accept a abutting appointment of a (very) claimed affectionate during your break in Indonesia. All kinds of STDs, including HIV/AIDS are widespread, so amuse yield precautions.

Drugs
Drugs should be an complete no-no. Don't even anticipate about bringing any drugs into Indonesia, because affairs are that you'll end up in jail. Don't be tempted to get any drugs whilst you are in Indonesia. If you absorb any breadth of time about Kuta, Legian, or Seminyak, you will apparently be offered some - amuse say no. Adventures In Indonesia

People are extremely biased. For some reason, Indonesia has the image of being a dangerous place to visit. Some cite political violence and terrorism, while others seem to think that erupting volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis are just daily natural occurrences there. While it is true that as a huge and socio-politically highly diverse nation Indonesia is very complex, and in its growing pains has experienced its share of misery due to politically instability, I would like to point out strongly here that not only is Indonesia a safe place to visit, but that its people are warm and friendly and are not yet jaded by greedy tourism as other countries can be. On the charge of terrorism in Bali and Jakarta, it is true that it occurred and no one can excuse it or lessen its tragic effects. However, for Indonesia, it is an anomaly, not a serious danger.

Simply put, Indonesia is one of the last places on earth where you can see, well, the earth itself at its very finest. Two things that people rarely mention in reference to Indonesia are the fact that much of it remains an amazingly pristine garden of eden the sights of which would astound you beyond belief and that sadly this garden like all the other pristine areas of the earth, is disappearing rapidly under the axe of man.

How could anyone not want to see Indonesia? It is home to the world's largest flower, the world's the largest butterfly, birds that defy imagination, and another massive flower that is carnivorous and is capable of digesting a baby monkey. Multiply the above by a thousand and you may get an idea of the natural tapestry of Indonesia. The bed upon which this quilt of life rests is parallel in majesty to the life it supports. Gorgeous mountains and volcanoes, sheer breathtaking cliffs and peculiar islands, turquoise seas and hidden lagoons, Indonesia has a monopoly on natural beauty that you will not find anywhere else.
